Human rights promotion in the EU foreign policy

After the end of the Cold War, promoting democracy became one of the main features of the foreign policy of the European Union (EU). The Maastricht Treaty of 1992 stated that one of the objectives of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) is to promote democracy, the rule of law, and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
