Interview with Anja Mihr – on Transitional Justice, Democratization and Challenges of Post-conflict Development

Why should amnesties be seen as the very last resort of any political decision to be taken in the transitional process? Which transitional justice mechanism is the most crucial to be imposed first in periods of the transition? What have we learned about transitional justice from the case of Spain after Franco’s death in 1975? Why does one of the reconciliation policies in Rwanda require former perpetrators who participated in Genocide to wash the bones and sculls of those they had killed in 1994? These questions were answered by Anja Mihr, Associate Professor at the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights, University of Utrecht (Netherlands), who is in her research focusing on transitional justice, reconciliation, human rights and democratization. Her work is mainly focused on transitional justice and reconciliation in Rwanda, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, Chile, Spain and Somaliland.

Interview with Peter Singer - On Global Poverty, Human Rights and Ethical Questions

De Camp professor of bioethics in a Centre for Human Values at Princeton University and Laureate professor at University of Melbourne, has been standing at the forefront of debates about our ethical obligations and approaching global poverty, euthanasia, abortions and animal rights for more than three decades.

Zaid Eyadat: The major motivation for Arab revolutions was about human dignity

Dr. Zaid Eyadat is a professor of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Jordan and the chairperson of the Human Rights and Human Development department. He graduated from the University of Southern California, where he continues to teach. He has also taught at various universities in the USA and Jordan and has worked as a consultant for diverse international organizations and NGOs. Recently he conducted a course called Islam and Human Rights at Faculty of Social Studies at Masaryk University in Brno. Editors of Global Politics and Bulletin of The Czech Centre for Human Rights and Democratization spoke with Mr. Eyadat about various issues ranging from Arab revolutions to multiculturalism and liberal islam.

Human rights promotion in the EU foreign policy

After the end of the Cold War, promoting democracy became one of the main features of the foreign policy of the European Union (EU). The Maastricht Treaty of 1992 stated that one of the objectives of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) is to promote democracy, the rule of law, and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. Furthermore, the Copenhagen criteria, which defines the conditions for EU membership, clearly indicates that one of the main requirements is the existence of institutions that ensure respect for human rights, democracy and the rule of law.

Konference o Radě Evropy a Evropském soudu pro lidská práva

U příležitosti významného výročí, které si v roce 2009 připomněla Rada Evropy a Evropský soud pro lidská práva (ESLP), uspořádalo Centrum pro lidská práva a demokratizaci ve spolupráci s Mezinárodním politologickým ústavem Masarykovy univerzity v Brně 3. prosince 2009 konferenci 60 let Rady Evropy – 50 let ESLP. Na konferenci vystoupila například advokátka Klára Veselá-Samková, právní asistent u ESLP Jan Kratochvíl, soudkyně Nejvyššího soudu ČR Kateřina Šimáčková, vládní zmocněnec pro zastupování před ESLP Vít Schorm, David Záhumenský z Ligy lidských práv nebo Dana Beková, která je ředitelkou Informační kanceláře Rady Evropy v ČR. V následujícím příspěvku blíže představíme hlavní témata a body diskuse prvního panelu konference s názvem Reflexe činnosti Rady Evropy a ESLP.

Egyptští Koptové – zapomenutí křesťané v údolí Nilu

V dnešní době je značně medializována otázka soužití křesťanů a o
křesťanské hodnoty se opírajících ateistů s muslimy v zemích euroatlantické
civilizace. Patřičnou pozornost si zaslouží také nejen v České republice
opomíjená problematika křesťanských menšin obývajících islámské státy. Mezi
tyto minority patří i egyptští Koptové, jejichž počet je odhadován na šest
až osm milionů. Hlavním cílem textu je přinést komplexní náhled na
problematiku koptské minority a upozornit na porušování jejích základních
práv, které se děje s nepřímým posvěcením egyptského státního aparátu.

Konflikt v Ituri (Demokratická republika Kongo)

Táto prípadová štúdia je pokusom analyzovať korene konfliktu v Ituri, jeho
priebeh a aktérov. Pozornosť bude venovaná aj porušeniam ľudských práv
a aktuálnemu dianiu, ktoré nově prebúdza určitú mieru optimizmu. Tento
optimizmus je však nutné vnímať prizmou 55 až 60 tisíc odhadovaných obetí
konfliktu v Ituri a s prihliadnutím na to, že štrukturálne príčiny konfliktu sa
odstraňujú iba veľmi pozvoľna.
